Katie Pushor
President and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce

Each morning starts with a Chai latte for Katie Pushor, the president and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. “It’s my quiet time to organize my thoughts for the day,” she says. “The rest of the day, I get along fine with all the adrenaline. It’s a very busy, stimulating job. Believe me; I don’t need any more coffee.” After spending some time with her, we certainly believe it. Pushor’s days usually begin with a breakfast event, then she’s in and out of meetings, and her workday typically runs past the 5:00 hour. Pushor is charged with running the oldest and largest Chamber in the state, consisting of more than 3,000 members. The Greater Phoenix Chamber was founded in 1888. “It’s a 24-hour type job,” she says.

1. Moby, the Siamese Beta Fighting Fish. “He keeps me company when I’m working late. He was a gift. My father passed away last year and someone sent me that fish. It’s lot of fun to have him there on the desk.”
2. “They’re coasters. My assistant – who runs my world – Cooki Peverini gave them to me for Boss’s Day. My magic carpet.”
3. “[Impact Magazine] is something that is very much on my mind because it’s a monthly [publication that is given to the Chamber members]. I write a column in it and am always providing input on the articles. I select the cover story and have to find members to put on the cover.”
4. This clock shows the time, temperature and humidity. “It just sits there, even though I have a Blackberry and a computer. I am chronically overscheduled.” As for the humidity? “It always registers zero.”
5. Orange Juice. “My assistant put that in there to keep up my vitamin C. She’s always afraid I’m going to get sick.”
6. “Actually, the way I sit I am always facing out the window. With all my phone calls I am looking directly at Camelback Mountain, and when I’m on the computer I am looking directly up Central, where the light-rail construction is.
“[While] I think the construction is in a difficult phase, I am very much looking forward to riding the rail to work. I think that will put our city in a whole other class when that project is completed.”
7. Katie enjoys watching the construction; it symbolizes her work. She especially enjoys watching the progress being made on the new Sheraton and the Phoenix Convention Center.
8. “My husband and I were guests at the Super Bowl host committee. We’re looking forward to the game coming to town in February.”
9. Within these folders are prospects for new members, information for the 50-member board meetings, updates on the Employer Sanctions Law, and staff meeting reminders – Pushor oversees a staff of 25.
10. Yankee Candle. “My sister sent that to me when I first took this job. A sage and citrus candle, which is meant to create a fresh start.”
11. “That’s actually very rare. It’s an actual lottery ball that they used in the Arizona Pick. The number one ball was retired and given to me when I left [as the Arizona Lottery director] in 2005.”
12. Katie co-chaired Governor Janet Napolitano’s first inauguration. “That was the poster that we gave to guests at the inauguration. She signed this one and gave it to me afterward.”
13. “That’s a reminder – everyday – to always try and recruit people, before I even pick up the phone.”
14. “That’s a list of all my staff, cell phones, office lines – a quick reference because I can’t keep it all in my head.”
15. Normally, Katie wears special contact lenses – one for hyperopia (farsightedness) and the other for myopia (nearsightedness). “With one eye I can read the e-mails and with the other eye I can watch movies and drive.”
16. “Riester, a large advertising company, had worked with me when I was at the Arizona Lottery, and when they saw the article they framed it and sent it over with their good wishes.”
17. “That’s one of my favorite artists, Linda Carter- Holman. She is a local artist and has become quite famous. My husband gave that to me when I took this job. It’s just very Southwestern and it’s about hospitality and graciousness with visitors; being gracious with people who a
