Arizona's US Senator John Kyl

Voted one of the Top Ten Senators in the U.S. by Time magazine in 2006, Jon Kyl, Arizona’s “other Senator,” has quietly forged a reputation for being a leading Senate figure and having played a pivotal role in shaping the current Republican agenda.

Senator Kyl, born in Nebraska, is the son of former U.S. Congressman John Henry Kyl of Iowa.

In December, Senator Kyl was elected as the Senate Minority Whip, the only Arizona Republican to have ever held such an influential Senate leadership post.

As one might imagine, Senator Kyl is a busy man, but he was gracious enough to find time to allow the Open Door crew in for a peek around his Phoenix office, one of three he uses.

1. Copy of The Times.
2. “Coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon.”
3. Piece of pottery Sen. Kyl received for his work on the Gila River Indian Community Settlement. “That was one of my major, major efforts.”
4. A photo of his family.
5. Award from the National Crime Victim Law Institute honoring Senator Kyl for distinguished service to victims of crime.
6. Photo of Sen. Kyl and President Bush in Phoenix, taken in 2004.
7. Bronze statue of a U.S. Forest Service firefighter.
8. This plaque was given to him by the Colorado River Indian Tribes for his instrumental work with the Indian Community Settlement.
9. “I worked with the forest service to help manage fires in the Payson area.”
11. Fossil of a 180 million-year-old Ammonite shell found in Madagascar.
12. Award from U.S. Oncology honoring Senator Kyl for his leadership in the war on cancer.
13. At a fundraiser, Senator Kyl had to catch this football. It is signed by former NFL quarterbacks Jack Kemp, Roger Staubaugh and Terry Bradshaw.
14. “Presidential signature pens on a bill that I got passed.”
15. Major Amy Young, a daughter of one of Senator Kyl’s staff, sent this flag while serving in Afghanistan.
16. While at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base’s 60th anniversary celebration, Senator Kyl received the shell of an A-10, also known as a “Warthog.” “It’s also called the tank killer. We have a lot of those planes over in Iraq right now.”
