Dan Majerle

In 1988, when the Suns announced they were drafting Dan Majerle, the crowd welcomed the news with a thunder of boos.

Then-coach Cotton Fitzsimmons spoke up, scolding the angry audience: “I think you people will be sorry you ever booed this young man.”

Through his legendary 14-year pro-basketball career, eight of which were spent with the Suns, Majerle has long since silenced the critics.

And although he retired as a player more than five years ago, his work as a popular sports commentator and as owner of the hip sports bar Majerle’s, Thunder Dan remains one of the most popular faces in the Suns organization.

This month the Open Door Policy crew paid a visit to Mr. Majerle’s office, located where else? In the sports bar’s basement downtown, which also just so happens to be Phoenix’s oldest existing commercial building.

As a hands-on owner regularly seen bartending or bussing tables on a busy night, Majerle admits to rarely spending time in the office. Still, he says he uses it as a sanctuary to escape the busy restaurant atmosphere or to watch the game in peace. In other words, semiretired at age 42, he’s still living just about every man’s dream.

1. Copy of The Times.
2. NBA Basketball.
3. Commemorative bottle of wine from the 2008 FBR Open. Majerle is an avid golfer.
4. TV. “When it gets too crowded upstairs and I need to watch the game, I come down here to watch it by myself.”
5. T-shirt from Majerle’s Sports Bar, which was opened in 1992. “There wasn’t a place for myself and my teammates to come down after a game. I wanted to really open a place that was close (to the arena) where people could eat, drink and stuff like that.”
6. Statue of Majerle dunking over retired NBA player Scottie Pippen. The statue commemorates Majerle’s All-Star status.
7.This commemorative star plaque was once in the sidewalk in front of Majerle’s until they caught someone trying to pry it out of the concrete. “We found some guy trying to dig it up and steal it, so we decided just to pull it up and bring it down here.”
8. Famous photo of Majerle dunking over the 7 foot, 7 inch Manute Bol, the tallest player to ever play in the NBA.
9. A trophy from the 2005 Radio Shack’s Shooting Stars. Majerle won the title, completing the basketball-shooting competition in just 28 seconds.
10. Basketball signed by Kevin McHale, a retired All-Star who played for the Boston Celtics.
