  HOT JOBS

Just Call Her ‘Bev’

Working in the sweltering Valley heat all day as a beverage-cart attendant and serving up concessions to local golfers at play can certainly be considered a “hot job.” But Sarah Webb, a native of oft-chilly Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, doesn’t let the 110-degree heat get to her.

“I really enjoyed it,” said Webb, reflecting on her first summer in the Grand Canyon State. “It didn’t bother me too much. If you stay hydrated — which for me is easy because I’m driving around with lots of water — wear lots of sunscreen, it’s easy. I enjoy the sunshine. I’m not a fan of the cold.”

The 25-year-old married mother of two was raised on a horse farm in Ontario, where temperatures were low but humidity was high. She enjoys the dry heat of Arizona and her job of selling food and beverages to golfers, who themselves might end up famished if not for her.

“It’s a great job,” says Webb, who previously worked as a server in a restaurant. “I get to spend a lot of time in the sun and get to know different people. It’s pretty much just about having fun — serving happy customers.

“You get to visit with a lot of people. I’ve gotten to know a lot of the regulars. It’s not quite the same as working at a restaurant. You don’t get a whole lot of complaints. Everyone’s just out there having fun and enjoying themselves.”

Company: Continental Golf Course in Scottsdale

Years in Business: 1

Why a golf cart concession attendant?  “I’ve been in the service industry for many years — probably 13 years now. I wanted to continue doing that. I like working for tips, commissions. That appeals to me, for sure. The harder you work, the more you make. I thought it would be so much fun to work at a golf course.”

Best Part:  “Probably the people. The people are very friendly. Nobody’s angry, nobody’s complaining. I enjoy a lot of things with my job. There’s nothing better than driving around in a golf cart, in the sunshine and chatting with people.”

Worst Part: She doesn’t believe there is one, but when pinned down, she did say

dodging golf balls can be a bit scary. “Most golfers know they just have to really watch out and keep their distance,” she says. “If you do get a stray ball, you make sure you yell as loud as you can. I’ve never actually been hit by a ball, but I’ve had a ball get really close to me, hit the front of my cart and stuff like that. I’m a little bit paranoid every time I hear, ‘Fore!’”

Not a Bad Golfer: Webb says she’s not a great golfer, though on occasion she’s proven otherwise. “The other day, I was out on the cart and there was a group of guys enjoying the sunshine, having beers,” she says. “One guy told me he made a bet with his friend that I could hit a better shot than his friend could. So we did it, and I actually did hit a better shot. So they ended up giving me a nice big tip.”
